This is the complete Sandakan wildlife tour with ample time and opportunities to view a wide range of wildlife. Sea turtles, orang utan, proboscis monkey, riverine crocodiles, wild cats, tropical birds and – if you’re lucky! – the Pygmy elephant of Borneo. Or maybe even a sun bear.  Wildlife viewing in the rainforest is not guaranteed due to the dense foliage but the more time you spend on the look-out, the more chances you have of seeing something truly spectacular. 

Day 1 – Sandakan - Selingan Turtle Island
0815hrs:  Meet upon arrival at the Sandakan Airport (preferably on MH2042 ETA0815hrs) or pick up from hotel in Sandakan. Transfer to jetty for a 45 minute to 1 hour boat ride to Selingan Turtle Islands Park. Free at leisure for the rest of the day. Snorkeling equipment are available for hire or you can just swim and relax on the beach. After dinner, wait for the rangers call to observe turtle laying eggs. Transfer the eggs to the hatchery and if there are young turtle hatchlings, an opportunity to observe the release of baby turtles to the open sea. Overnight at chalet. (L, D)

Day 2 – Selingan Turtle Island – Sepilok Orang Utan Centre – by boat to Sukau
0700hrs: Depart island for Sandakan and visit the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center.  Proceed to the free roaming area feeding platform for the feeding at 10.00am.  Lots of opportunities to take photos of the orang utans and macaques that often join in the fun at the feeding platform.  Depart Sepilok for the Sandakan jetty and river cruise up the Kinabatangan River. Stop over at Abai village at the estuary for lunch before arriving at Sukau. Enjoy an afternoon river cruise to Menanggul River for wildlife spotting. Birdlife is also plentiful here. Overnight at river lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 3 – Kelenanap Ox-bow lake and river cruise
Wake up by the calls of gibbons and hornbills. Early morning, take a river trip to the Kelenanap ox-bow Lake to observe wildlife and experience the early morning river ambience of the longest river of Sabah. Return to lodge for breakfast then free at own leisure. Another river cruise in the late afternoon to search for more wildlife. Overnight at river lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 4 – Sukau – by boat to Sandakan
After breakfast, river cruise down river by boat back to Sandakan. Another chance to spot wildlife during this approximately 2.5 hour journey. Upon arrival at jetty, drive uphill to the Puh Jih Syh Buddhist Temple, which offers a panoramic view of Sandakan Bay before lunch at local restaurant. Transfer to airport or your hotel. (B, L)

Notes:

• Please book 3 – 6 months in advance, if possible.
• Visit to Turtle Island will be arranged at the beginning or at the end of the tour depending on accommodation availability at the island
• Stay at Abai Jungle Lodge can be arranged instead of Sukau or when accommodation at Sukau is fully booked.
• If overnight at Abai Jungle Lodge, you will visit the Pitas ox-bow lake
• Night River cruise is strictly dependant on weather and also only upon request. Extra charge will be added, or guests can choose during stay to request and pay on the spot.
• You are recommended to book flight MH2042 ETD: 0730hrs from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and MH2047 (formerly MH2709)/ ETD: 1400hrs from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu. If you are already in Sandakan, the pick up point will be from Sabah Hotel or Hotel Sandakan. Pick up time will be between 0945hrs-0955hrs. Drop off at the end of the tour will be at these respective hotels or any other city hotel. A surcharge will be imposed for drop off at hotels outside Sandakan.

Recommended Personal Gear
Torchlight, swim wear, insect repellent, raincoat (umbrella not recommended), hat, binoculars, sun screen (sweat proof) and personal toiletries. Use good walking shoes and comfortable cotton T-shirt with long or short pant.
